Meet Jimmy: he’s 26 years old and unemployed. He’s spent time on the streets and hangs with the wrong crowd. His drug of choice is ice and his biggest worry is fi nding the cash for another hit. His criminal record is as long as your arm and he’s just been caught again. This time it’s breaking and entering. Eight houses in total with a haul worth thirty grand.
What should Jimmy’s punishment be? Will sending him to jail stop him re-offending? Or, with the right help, could Jimmy start to turn his life around?
Join moderator Meshel Laurie and a panel of experts for a lively yet informative discussion about the ways the legal system deals with drug addicts who break the law.
The 2010 Law Week Hypothetical will give you the chance to be the judge. After hearing all the facts of the case, what sentence would you deliver? Meshel — well-known comedian and radio-television personality — will guide the panel and audience through a scenario, exploring diversionary sentencing options and the Drug Court program. You’ll get the chance to ask questions, make comments and learn more about our justice system and the issues that confront our courts, prisons and community services.
