Free legal help for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders - Townsville NAIDOC Deadly Day Out
Queensland’s First Nations people can access free information on family, criminal and civil law at Legal Aid Queensland’s stall during NAIDOC Week celebrations in Townsville this week.
NAIDOC Week (7-14 July) celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and highlights important issues facing our First Nations people.
Legal Aid Queensland is hosting a family-friendly stall at the Townsville NAIDOC Deadly Day Out at Riverway, Pioneer Parklands on 12 July from 11:30am to 4:30pm.
Queenslanders of all ages are welcome to come along and find out more about our services. Children will also be kept busy while the adults chat, with colouring-in activities and healthy snacks available at the stall.
Legal Aid Queensland senior advisor, Margaret Hornagold, a Barada and Kabalbara woman, said NAIDOC Week provides the perfect opportunity to raise awareness about culturally-appropriate legal services available to our First Nations people.
“Legal Aid Queensland has Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff in several of our offices across the state,” Ms Hornagold said.
“Our First Nations staff members also do some great outreach work, visiting the Cape, Gulf and Far North Queensland, as well as the far west, to ensure regional and remote Queenslanders can access our services.
"Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can get free legal help by calling our Indigenous Hotline on 1300 650 143 (for the cost of a local call). We can also put people in touch with other services in their local area.”
The Legal Aid Queensland website (www.legalaid.qld.gov.au) also has useful information on common legal issues.
