Free legal help for Indigenous Queenslanders

ABORIGINAL and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders can access free legal information on common family, criminal and civil law issues when Legal Aid Queensland staff attend NAIDOC Week celebrations in Brisbane this week.

Held from July 2–9, NAIDOC Week celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, raises awareness of Indigenous issues and highlights the range of services available to Indigenous people.

Legal Aid Queensland will have an information booth at the Musgrave Park Family Fun Day in South Brisbane, on Friday July 7, from 9am to 3pm. All Queenslanders are welcome to come along and find out more about our services.

Legal Aid Queensland CEO Anthony Reilly said NAIDOC Week provided an opportunity to celebrate Indigenous people and their culture.

“NAIDOC Week and the Musgrave Park Family Fun Day provides us with the chance to celebrate Indigenous history and culture and highlight the vital contributions Indigenous people make to our society,” Mr Reilly said.

“Legal Aid Queensland will be at the Musgrave Park Family Fun Day to raise awareness about our legal services and to let the Indigenous community know that we are here to help them with legal problems.

“We have 14 offices located around our state, and our staff also visit the Cape, Gulf and western areas of north Queensland to ensure regional and remote Queenslanders can access our services.

"By calling our Indigenous Infoline on 1300 650 143 (for the cost of a local call), people can get free legal help about their legal problem. We can also put people in touch with other services in their local area.”
