Free legal help for war widows, widowers and veterans: Legal Aid Queensland
Date 10 November 2020
As we pause for Remembrance Day (Wednesday 11 November), Legal Aid Queensland is reminding war widows/widowers and veterans free legal help is available to access disability pensions.
The War Veterans’ Legal Aid Scheme provides free legal help to war widows/widowers, veterans and their dependents wanting to appeal a decision made about disability entitlements by the Veterans’ Review Board.
Legal Aid Queensland Acting CEO Nicky Davies said the organisation is keen to raise awareness of its service, highlighting these people don’t need to pay for legal support to appear before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.
“War widows/widowers, veterans and their families can contact Legal Aid Queensland on 1300 65 11 88 to find out about their entitlements,” Ms Davies said.
“To be eligible for the scheme, war widows/widowers and veterans need to show that they, or their partner, have served during war times or in overseas operations and suffered a disability, disease or death as a result.
“They will need to have had the Veterans’ Review Board decide against their war-caused claim or pension assessment and be at the point where they intend to appeal that decision to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.”
Ms Davies said Legal Aid Queensland provides war widows/widowers, veterans and their dependents with a high-quality, free service to help them with their appeal.
