Legal Aid Queensland Board welcomes appointment of new CEO

Date 25 February 2020

The Legal Aid Queensland Board has congratulated Nicky Davies on her appointment as the organisation’s new chief executive officer.

Chair of the Legal Aid Queensland Board, The Hon Margaret McMurdo AC, said Ms Davies was an experienced lawyer and manager who had worked for Legal Aid Queensland for more than two decades, most recently as Legal Practice Senior Director and Acting Chief Executive Officer.

“Ms Davies has done an excellent job acting in the CEO role over the past months under what have been often challenging circumstances, guiding the organisation through its response to the pandemic,” Ms McMurdo said.

“She brings a wealth of experience to the position, having joined the organisation as a family lawyer in 1996 and spending a large part of her career as Director of the Family Law and Civil Justice Services Division.”

Ms McMurdo said Ms Davies was a highly respected lawyer nationally who had represented Legal Aid Queensland on committees and working groups and has held prestigious positions relating to family law and domestic violence.

“She has successfully collaborated with stakeholders on many significant and diverse legal service delivery programs and has demonstrated her strong commitment to supporting financially disadvantaged people to access legal assistance,” she said.

“Ms Davies has a clear vision for Legal Aid Queensland as well as a deep sense of social justice and understanding of the work environment.

“Her effective, determined and always practical approach to leadership and problem solving will ensure the organisation is well equipped to navigate the challenges it will inevitably face over the next five years”.

Legal Aid Queensland’s previous CEO, Anthony Reilly, was appointed to the position of Queensland Ombudsman in July 2020, after 10 years with the organisation.

“The board welcomes Ms Davies’ appointment and we look forward to working with her to continue to provide quality legal services to disadvantaged members of our community.”

Ms Davies will officially take up the role from Monday March 1, 2021.
