HUMAN rights lawyer and experienced legal assistance sector leader Matilda Alexander has been appointed to the Legal Aid Queensland board.
Ms Alexander has more than 20 years’ experience in human rights law—including at Queensland Advocacy for Inclusion, Prisoners’ Legal Service and LGBTI Legal Service—and an enduring passion for justice and human rights.
Ms Alexander has also taught Prison Law at Griffith University and practised human rights law at the Queensland Human Rights Commission and as a lawyer with Legal Aid Queensland.
Ms Alexander has also been selected three times as a delegate to the United Nations Conference of State Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in New York.
Legal Aid Queensland CEO Nicky Davies welcomed the appointment and said Ms Alexander would bring a wealth of experience to the board.
“Ms Alexander has worked extensively with vulnerable communities and has a deep understanding of the needs of our clients,” Ms Davies said.
“Her knowledge of our organisation and the work we do to provide legal services across Queensland to financially disadvantaged people will be of great assistance to our Board and the executive leadership team.”
Ms Alexander has won a number of awards for her outstanding contributions to the sector, including the QLS 2022 Pride in Law Award.
Currently CEO of Queensland Advocacy for Inclusion, Ms Alexander is also Patron of the LGBTI Legal Service and is appointed to the Independent Ministerial Advisory Council, Queensland Disability Advisory Council, LGBTIQ+ Roundtable and the National Strategy Advisory Group.
She has been appointed to the Legal Aid Queensland board for a three-year term.
Ms Davies also thanked outgoing long-serving board member Sandra Deane for her significant contributions to the board and the organisation over an extraordinary 12 years of service.
